Just My Luck by Adele Parks

Just My Luck cover

For fifteen years, Lexi and Jake have played the same six numbers with their friends. Over drinks, dinner parties and summer barbecues, the three couples have discussed the important stuff—kids, marriages, careers—and they’ve laughed off their disappointment when they failed to win anything.

But then the unthinkable happens. There’s a rift in the group. Someone is caught in a lie. And soon after, six numbers come up that change everything forever.

Lexi and Jake have a ticket worth millions. And their friends are determined to claim a share.

Thank you Mira Books/Harper Collins for my copy of Just My Luck by Adele Parks in exchange for my honest review.  This title releases April 6, 2021.

This was a fun tale about a group of friends and how their dynamic changes when one of the couples wins the lottery.  I thought the author did a great job with the characters in showing the effects something like winning a big lottery can have on people and the choices they make.

Lexi and Jake were the the lucky winners and although they have been married for a long time and have two children, I don’t think Lexi really knew her husband and his true colours definitely shined after they hit the jackpot.  In so many ways, Jake proved to be an unlikeable character, while Lexi pulled at your heart strings and managed to resonate best with me.  Lexi was the more reasonable of the pair, while Jake became reckless and greedy – which started rubbing off on his daughter Emily.

This was a slow-burn with some light twists and turns along the way but did hit some darkness about 3/4 way through and then picked up steam and the story really unravelled from there.

The story is told from a few perspective, which I enjoyed and I thought Parks’ did a great job at ultimately weaving them all together.  The ending leaves you feeling a bit fooled – but I won’t say why!

Overall, this was a fun and light domestic suspense and in true Adele Parks fashion, the rug will be pulled from under you when it’s all said and done.  I recommend picking this one up if you are already a fan of Adele Parks, or if you are looking for a lighter read that will keep you entertained.

My rating: 4/5
